The latest from Vegas

This city is crazy!

I’m departing in a few minutes for the movie set.

Very exciting.

Jim Caviezel and his family sat near me in the waiting lounge at the airport.

I didn’t bother him, even though I was bursting to tell him that my parents and I watch The Count of Monte Cristo a lot (and you should, too).

But.

I’ve long been saying that he should play Superman, and now, having seen the man in person, and having seen how good and kind he is with his kids, I can honestly say that I felt like I was sitting a few seats away from Superman himself.

And then this very loud, frantic woman ran through the waiting area screaming, “Oh my Gaaaawwwww, I seen Tyrese! I seen Tyrese!”

The hotel in Vegas is nice. They have an Emperor’s Buffet that’s quite … imperial. Except for last night, when a little girl sitting near me sighed to her mother and said, “Mommy, they don’t have any macaroni and cheese.”

Little lady, I agree.

But today I went to the Pizza Palace and enjoyed the highest pasta-to-price ratio of my life with some linguine alfredo with Italian sausage on the side. They didn’t skimp on the salad or the garlic bread, either. And it was the best Pepsi I’ve ever sipped.

And I’m writing this from the hotel’s “cyber cafe” and so far it’s cost me about $49 (which is only a slight exaggeration), so have a wonderful day and I’ll be back with more tidbits later in the week.

Including the “Bruce Wayne: Behind the Mask” essay that I’m working on, and more pictures as I can, and I really need to go because if I type for five more minutes I’ll have spent this month’s rent, and next month’s.

Much love, Gang.

Lots more to come.

California pictures, vol. 1

You can go right here and check out the first round of vacation pictures which are currently in the process of uploading.

I’ll organize them when I get home.

Thanks to Kyle & Derek, the lovely Kate, and Kareem and his amazing family (and Claire) for the amazing hospitality so far.

This has been the best vacation of my life and it’s only getting better.

Off to Vegas tomorrow! Then back to L.A. for … THE DARK KNIGHT … on Thursday night.

On IMAX.

More soon!

Leaving on a jet plane …

… but I do know when I’ll be back again.

I’m going to Los Angeles (with detours to Santa Barbara and Las Vegas) from July 11 to July 21.

I get to L.A. on Friday; I’m renting a car and driving it to Derek and Kyle’s house, where we’ll hang out and then later meet up with my good friend Kareem and his gorgeous girlfriend Claire and his friends Jonathan and Zeve to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Saturday morning I’m driving the rental car up to the ridiculously beautiful Santa Barbara, where I will be treated to excellent hospitality and tour guidance by my ridiculously beautiful friend Kate. She’s taking me on a tour of her favorite Santa Barbara spots on Saturday, and taking me up into the mountains, and then on Sunday she’s taking me to wine country.

This is all very exciting.

And then Sunday night I’m driving back down to L.A. to meet Kareem’s family and have a fine dinner. I’ll be staying with them Sunday night, and then …

… on Monday morning I’m driving back to the airport, where I’ll get on a plane that will take me to Las Vegas the set of Magic Man, the new thriller being made by my good friend Alexander Nevsky, who’s a multi-talented actor, writer, author, producer, and bodybuilder. I can’t wait to see him and his lovely wife Katya again. The movie stars Alexander, Billy Zane, Robert Davi, Richard Tyson, and Bai Ling. This will be my first trip to a movie set, so it’s very exciting. And Alexander and I are doing to discuss some things that might lead to some very interesting news here on the old blog. Stay tuned.

Then on Wednesday it’s back to Los Angeles, where Kareem is picking me up at the airport and we’re going to present the gloriously high-definition Blu-ray of Batman Begins to his parents, who haven’t seen it. I’ve never seen it in high definintion, so I can’t wait for that.

And then … Thursday … Kareem and Claire and their friend Kay-Anne and I will be seeing THE DARK KNIGHT on IMAX at midnight!

WHAMMY.

Preceded by some In-and-Out Burger, which is very exciting to me because I love burgers and I especially love new burgers that I’ve never tried before.

We’re going to the movie again with Kareem’s parents on Friday, and again with Jonathan and Zeve on Saturday.

And I’m hoping to see my awesome friend Racheal at some point in there, too.

I get home way late on Monday night, July 21, and I’ll get caught up on everything then.

In the meantime I won’t be posting much; I will put up my Batman essay next Thursday and I’ll write a short thing about The Dark Knight after I see it next Thursday night with a larger review to follow upon my return.

I’ll also be updating my Flickr account as often as I can with pictures from the main trip and the exciting detours.

In the meantime, check out Bill “Jett” Ramey’s incomparable Batman on Film for all the latest Batman movie news, and my friend Stephanie’s own excellent Dark Knight coverage right here; she has an amazing talent for collecting all kinds of awesome tidbits and presenting them with a lot of commentary and sass.

And I’ll see you after July 21!

Be safe.

Be good to each other.

I’ll talk to you soon.

Bring me your planes, your trains, your automobiles

You heard the man.

I’m moving.

In about every way a man can move.

First, some background.

Last week, I got a lovely package in the mail.

It was a petition signed by 16,718 of my loyal readers, asking me to please resume blogging.

Okay.

That’s entirely not true.

But I did get an email from One Reader asking me when I was going to start talking about Batman and girls who play guitar again.

The answer is, “As soon as I can.”

Right now I’m neck deep in boxes of my belongings as I prepare to move to another city in another state. Moving isn’t fun, but the end result will be well worth it. My new apartment building looks like it came straight from the set of Three’s Company in 1977. I love it.

(Come and knock on my door. I’ll be waiting for you.)

So that’s what I’ve been doing. And my computer’s the next thing to be boxed up, so you’ll hear even less out of me, if that’s possible, until I get everything set up and settled in the new place, which should be sometime in early June.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on some top secret writing projects that shall remain top secret until such time that they no longer have to remain top secret.

And I’ve still been cranking out comic book reviews for my good friend Bill Ramey over at Batman on Film.

You can read my recent Detective Comics reviews here and my recent Batman Confidential reviews here, and then you can click here to read my review of Batman #676, which I did this weekend as a favor/fill-in for Bill until he can take over his regular reviews of that particular title with #677 which, coincidentally, comes out this week.

And then!

And then!

I’m going to move the site off of WordPress entirely, for a list of reasons as long as Jeff Goldblum.

You’ll always be able to find me at johnbierly.com, which currently points right back to here but will point to the new site once I figure out where to put it, how to make it, and all kinds of other things that I don’t know the first thing about.

But we’ll figure it out.

Okay.

Time to pull the plug on my computer and put it in a box. I’ve missed you guys this month, and thanks again to all of you who’ve written to check on me.

I’ll still have email at work.

And.

I’ll see you soon.

Whammy!

Indiana John and the Earthquake of WEAK

I was awakened this morning by the earthquake.

From the Associated Press:

5.4 earthquake rocks Illinois; also felt in Indiana

WEST SALEM, Ill. (AP) — A 5.4 earthquake early Friday rocked people awake as far away as Indiana, surprising residents unaccustomed to such a large Midwest temblor.

The quake just before 4:37 a.m. was centered 6 miles from West Salem, Ill., and 66 miles from Evansville, Ind. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

“It shook our house where it woke me up,” said David Behm of Philo, 10 miles south of Champaign. “Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. The house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It’s not like California.”

The quake also shook tall buildings in downtown Indianapolis, about 160 miles northeast of the epicenter.

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Ringle in Evansville said there were no immediate reports of damage.

And that’s really all I’ve got to say about that. I honestly thought it was a malfunction of my neighbor’s washing machine making my wall shake a little.

Carry on.

A weekend of women and song

Two of my favorite things are concerts and girls who sing, and this weekend will be filled with both.

One of my best friends, Melissa, is celebrating her birthday day — happy birthday, Melissa! — and tonight a bunch of us are going to see Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire (at Freedom Hall in Louisville) to celebrate.

I’m not really a Reba fan, but I ache for Kelly Clarkson.

I’m actually hoping to somehow get her to notice me in the crowd and hire me to become the chef on her tour bus, where we’ll fall in love and life will be wonderful every day until the end of forever.

Seriously, Kelly. Think about it. I’ll make you laugh. I can cook whatever you like. It’ll be fun. I promise!

Please?

I should get home from the Kelly show just in time to see my original favorite female songbird, Lisa Loeb, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

If you can stay up that late, please check it out.

Lisa is finally releasing The Purple Tape on CD next Tuesday, January 22. It’s a collection of songs she recorded before her song “Stay” became, in 1994, the first number one song by an unsigned artist.

Her first official album, Tails, followed in 1995.

Her Firecracker album (from 1997) is one of my all-time top-five albums. Be sure, also, to pick up her more recent releases like Hello Lisa and The Way It Really Is.

Lisa’s currently working on a second children’s album and another studio record for grownups. More information on those projects will show up here as soon as I know it.

And then on Saturday, several us of are going to see one of my favorite gals, Garrison Starr, at a house concert in Louisville.

Details here.

So if you live in Louisville, be there!

And if you don’t live in Louisville, start driving, because this will be a show you can’t miss.

You won’t believe what her voice can do. Which is why you have to hear it for yourself.

Garrison’s most recent album is The Girl That Killed September. Check it out. And The Sound of You & Me. And Airstreams & Satellites. And Songs from Take-off to Landing. Just get them all. It’ll be easier that way.

It’s going to be a very good weekend.

Identity theft isn't fun

Being a victim of identity theft has become an unfortunate rite of passage for many people in this crazy digital age, and I just earned my merit badge.

On Friday, I bought a couple of burgers and a Coke at Rally’s. I used my debit card.

When I got home and sat down to record the amount in Quicken, I realized I’d left the receipt at work. So I hopped online to check my bank balance.

There was the charge for the burger.

But there was another charge made that afternoon. A $1 pre-authorization by Yahoo Wallet.

Huh?

So I called Yahoo Wallet, and was told that the charge was made because I’d just signed up for their services, which include easy, one-stop checkout for thousands of online merchants.

Only I hadn’t done that.

She looked up the transaction by my debit card number and told me that the account had been registered with my name, my address and my debit card number, including the three-digit security code on the back of the card.

Only I hadn’t done that.

And of course they couldn’t tell me who (as in an email address) set up the account, because that’s confidential information, even though the jackass who set up the account was using MY confidential information.

Charming.

She gave me an email address to send a complaint to.

Charming.

So now I’m waiting several business days to hear a response from that.

Maybe.

So then I called my bank, and had them kill my debit card. The person who set up this account hadn’t purchased anything yet, but they were definitely getting ready to go on a shopping spree. Such thieves typically use other people’s credit cards to buy things like digital downloads that don’t require anything being shipped. That’s where they get you.

And then I had to go down to the bank in person so that they could give me temporary online access so that I’ll be able to monitor my account from home.

I’ll get the replacement debit card in 7-10 business days.

Then I visited the Federal Trade Commission’s website and followed the steps.

I had to freeze my credit.

But I was able to view my credit report for free from the big three credit agencies, and there was no suspicious activity.

You should really do this, by the way.:

Free Annual Credit Report

You’re able to request your full credit report once every year from each of the big three.

Please, please do this. It will cost you nothing, and it could save you everything.

And then I filled out a huge report on the FTC’s website, and I expect to be contacted by someone from the FTC next week.

So I’ve got lots of paperwork and frustrations to look forward to over the next few weeks, but at least they didn’t get anything.

Pfffft.

Oh, well.

I’d like to give a special thank-you to the Rallyburgers that indirectly rescued me from being cleaned out.
