[...] My Batman isn't a revenge-driven lunatic. My Batman might scare the living hell out of a criminal, but he's not cruel. My Batman is a HERO. My Batman doesn't just care about turning fear back upon the bad guys. My Batman puts greater value on inspiring the innocent. And that's why I love the Christopher Nolan interpretation of the character, who comes alive via the incredible talents of Christian Bale. They found a way to make Batman a hero again. They found a way to get to the heart of Bruce Wayne without compromising the power of Batman. I wrote a big essay about this a couple of years ago; you can read it right here. [...]

S373N: Uh ... what?

Alex: Ohh, indeed. I like your Ra's/Joker description. Very nice.

And oh, man, wait until you see TDK. I agree, the moment with Bruce exposing himself to his fear of bats in the cave was brilliant and so powerful ... but what's my favorite scene/moment now that I've seen TDK? Hmmm ...

Good stuff, John.

I think Nolan's biggest sucess is in combining the realism of the structure he is able to build his films on and the mythological characters he's able to put around them.

The concept of the man who wants to be selfless for what he believes in, with then The Joker, the concept of evil in the flesh, and exploring their different characteristics under a real-world realm.

The moment of Bruce standing alone in the cave, symbolical of going to his darkness within is the best moment of BEGINS, if not the franchise (though I have to see TDK).

Nolan is able to explore the hero concept with grace, but always retaining that darkness in his various character flaws. He's not the most heroic of characters, but he's still one of those that will go to the end for justice. Exemplified in Batman muddled under the pile of people, but still fighting his way to Ra's in the film's climax.

And heck, isn't Liam Neeson a GREAT Ra's al Ghul? What The Joker pushes in Bruce as a fight against the devil, Ra's does to tempt him in traditional Faust fashion to join the devil himself.

From character faults, to the tragicness of it, to relentless desire to be nevertheless heroic, Nolan and Bale nailed so much about the character in BEGINS that Wednsday (when I watch TDK) feels painful to wait.

But again, good post, man.

22-JULY-2008

Coming Summer 2010 ?? CONTACT WB IN REGARDS

BATMAN: BELIEVE

Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart) is back and after the Bat, but with help, it seems that Joker's old fling Selina Kyle (Carla Gugino) is out for vengeance and searching for her ex-lover, who was reportedly killed being broken out of a maximum-security prison by an unnamed relative (Robin Williams).

Down in the dumps, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) stumbles upon an orphaned 19 year-old, Robin (Zac Efron) and takes him under his wing, giving him a home.

22-JULY-2008

From this new information I can tell you Catwoman, Selina Kyle, will be there, thank god it's not Halle Berry again, yuck!
Maybe Robin Williams is Joker's father and possibly Riddler?
And who knows if we'll actually see Joker, being deceased and all.

Great post! I don't read comics but I love the Batman films. I have a super deep emotional attachment to Burton's Batman but can't deny that Batman Begins is the best.

AWESOME, awesome essay, man. You hit all the right notes with that. They did a great job in Batman Begins---and that's the Bruce/Batman I love, too. Not the tough ass, emotionless jerk. He can be both cool and horrifyingly dangerous and dark without being cold and dehumanized. That's the REAL Batman.

And that's why BTAS rocked, too.

(Even though I admit, I do enjoy All Star Batman & Robin ... heh ...)
