I would cast Rachel McAdams as Lois. Michael Clark Duncan?? Ummm, not so much. I don't think they had black people on Krypton.

the old draft of wolverine was awwwwful and looked to be a quickie sequel much akin to ELEKTRA (it was just wolverine and sabertooth fighting repeatedly). Thankfully, Jackman is a bit of a powerplayer now and can effectively veto a crap script.

I'd personally love a serious take on Hydra -- did you read millar's enemy of the state arc? Best fucking wolverine story, yet totally impossible to film.

Great post. This was the first Superman movie that I got to see in the theaters so I was excited. Liked it when I saw it. Not so much after I thought about it.

Also, the horrible characterization of Superman, in my opinion, is the reason that the movie didn't do as well as everyone had hoped it would. People weren't drawn to him like they have been in the past.

Sorry, Kyle, didn't mean to mangle your words. As always, you're right on target. (And I predict us being on the same page about Spidey 3.)

As for Goyer and Magneto, I'm less concerned about Goyer than I am about why we need a friggin' Young Magneto movie in the first place. The concentration camp scene in the first X-Men was done so well -- and said so much -- that it's all the origin I ever need.

I hope they get really ambitious with the Wolverine movie and do it in Japan. That would rock. But I'm afraid they'll play it safe.

We'll see.

I said batman was about the TOLL vengence and tragedy takes on a man. Bruce wanted Vengence in begins until he found his hope angle. Bats is about the price of suffering and trying to come out of it a better person, or trying to come out of it at all.

Now can we talk about Goyer doing MAGNETO? I mean, he can make a good story, but he ain't no director...

Thanks so much for all the comments!

Matt: You are exactly right, man. (As usual.) Why make a pick-and-choose sequel to the old movies, and why five years in space? The entire movie is built on the premise that we have to believe Superman would run off like that. At the very least, they could have said that he went on a mission in space and got into some huge kind of mess he didn't expect and was just now getting back. But no, we get some text on the screen at the beginning that says he went in search of his (known to be exploded) home planet. Yikes. Thanks again for the comment, and like you I wish the younger generation of Superman fans had been given a hero they could look up to.

Katy: I'll write a Superman movie if you'll write Gilmore Girls. Deal? Done. I knew you'd see it my way. :)

Kyle: I've been loving the JLU DVDs, which are such big fun. I love the characterizations. As for Batman being about vengeance, what I liked about Batman Begins was that rather than focusing on darkness and revenge, this Batman was concerned just as much with being a symbol of hope for the good people of Gotham City as he was with becoming something criminals would fear. This was the first time in a Batman movie where the "symbol of hope" angle was a big part of the story. As I've said a million times, it took us into the heart of Bruce Wayne without taking away from the power of Batman. As for Superman, I agree that it's hard to make him easy to relate to. But I think it's being done pretty well right now in the comics. And yes, I'm glad Kate Bosworth has rediscovered the cheeseburger. I was getting worried about here there for a while. :)

Darkhonor: I'm so sorry! :) I didn't mean to burst your Superman bubble! I had a troubled history with this movie. I knew about the storyline before I saw it, and at first, I hated it. But then I saw the AMAZING trailer for the movie and I thought, well, I don't like the story but at least the trailer leads me to believe it'll be good for what it is. But the actual movie was such a travesty that I was extra shocked, no matter how much I thought I'd prepared myself. And yes, the music was amazing. I think there's no better movie theme than Superman's, and I wish the movie had been worthy of the music. Gar!

Thanks again for all the comments and discussion!

Thank you for opening my eye to the travesty that this film really was. I knew it was.. Somehow I always knew, but I blissfully allowed the movie to wrap me up and take me off to Superman-land (the damn music did it)... and you've brought me back and now I am sad. I wish they could do the man Justice, and I'm not sure they can.

Some men want their heroes to be better than themselves, and some men want their heroes to be identifiable to themselves. I don't want a superhero to try and be better than me.

That said, there never will be a truly great superman movie. There just won't. It's what 60 years and a Jesus complex does to a character ... the closest we'll probably ever get is Justice League Unlimited, and I think he excelled there because he wasn't the focal point.

Batman is about the toll tragedy and vengeance leaves on a man, X-men is about being an outsider, and to some Superman is about being perfect and being beyond reproach ... and others take him as someone trying to be human or figuring out his destiny. There's just too much.

But yes, what a corner they painted themselves in with kid.

(at least it looks like Bosworth is eating again...)

Beautifully and passionately stated, John. I love your Superman. They should let guys like you make movies. At least I get to go to bed knowing that someone out there still cares about the kind of men our superheroes are.
